## The headache

A homeowner's AC dies at night. They call you. It rings out. They call the next shop on Google, and that shop gets the job. It happens again when you're on a ladder or under a sink. Every missed call is work you paid to attract and then handed to someone else.

## The pick: Rosie (AI receptionist)

**What it does:** It answers your business line 24/7 in a normal voice. It takes the caller's name, number, and problem. It can book the job on your calendar and text you a summary right away.

**Who it's for:** Shops and crews of 1–15 people that miss calls after hours or while working on a job.

**Price (checked on Rosie's pricing page, Oct 15, 2026):**

- **Scale: $149/month.** This is our pick. You get 1,000 minutes, booking straight onto your calendar, live call transfers, and texting callers during the call.
- Professional: $49/month. You get 250 minutes, message taking, and appointment links sent by text, but no direct calendar booking.
- 7-day free trial. Pay yearly and you get 2 months free.

**Setup time:** About an afternoon. Rosie learns the basics from your Google Business profile and website. Then you add your FAQs, set your hours, and forward your number to it. You keep your existing number.

**Why it wins:** For a small trade business it has the best mix of price, booking, and transfers. It handles English and Spanish on every call. It filters spam and has a phone app. Plans are a flat monthly price with minutes included, and you don't have to sit through a sales call to sign up.

**One limitation:** It's billed by the minute. Long, chatty calls burn through your allowance. Check your usage after the first month.

**How a 5-person shop would use it Monday:**

1. In the morning, sign up for the trial and let Rosie pull in your Google profile.
2. Add 5 answers: your service area, hours, emergency fee, the brands you work on, and how soon you can come out.
3. Connect the office calendar. Set it to transfer to the on-call tech's cell for real emergencies.
4. Forward the business line after 5 PM, and forward again whenever nobody picks up within 4 rings.
5. Tuesday morning, read the overnight summaries over coffee and call back the hot ones first.

## Runner-up: Goodcall Growth, $129/month

You pay for each unique caller, not by the minute. That covers 500 unique customers a month, then 26¢ each. A long booking call costs the same as a short one, and spam doesn't count. It's a good fit if your calls run long. Starter is $79/month for 100 customers. You can build a free demo agent and pay only when you connect a number. (Checked Oct 15, 2026.)

## Budget pick: Smith.ai AI Receptionist Free, $0/month

You get 25 calls a month, then $3.00 per call. It comes with 24/7 answering, recordings, and summaries. Use it to test whether you even have an after-hours problem before you pay anyone. If your volume grows, the next plan is Pro at $150/month. (Checked Oct 15, 2026.)

## Ignore this

- "Build your own AI voice agent" developer platforms. These are the hyped tools for wiring up your own phone bot from scratch. They're powerful, but you'd be paying a developer to rebuild what Rosie does out of the box. Skip them unless you have 20+ locations.
- A full CRM overhaul just to stop missed calls. You don't need a new all-in-one system to fix this problem. Fix the phone first. Change software later, if ever.

## What changed

AI receptionist pricing has split into 3 models. Some charge by the minute (Rosie), some by the call (Smith.ai), and some by the unique caller (Goodcall). Choose the model that matches how your calls actually run: short and many, or long and few.

## The 10-minute task

Open your phone's call log, or your carrier's portal. Count the calls you missed last week between 5 PM and 8 AM, plus the ones that rang out during the day. Multiply that by your average ticket. That number is what the headache costs you each week. If it's more than $149, you know what to do.
